A question? Our FAQ section lists the most frequently asked questions about termites and the NOVATERM® detection and monitoring system.

Termites in United-States

What do termites look like?

Termites are small, soft-bodied insects that resemble ants but are usually pale in color, ranging from white to light brown. They have straight antennae and a thick waist, unlike ants, which have a narrow waist and bent antennae. Some termites have wings, especially reproductive termites (also called swarmers), which are often mistaken for flying ants.

Do termites fly?

Yes, some termites can fly, but only during their reproductive stage. These winged termites, known as swarmers, emerge to find new places to establish colonies. Once they land, they shed their wings and begin reproducing. If you see flying termites in your home, it may indicate an existing infestation.

Do termites eat treated wood?

Termites prefer untreated wood, but they can still attack treated wood if it becomes damp, old, or if the treatment has worn off. Some pressure-treated wood is resistant to termites, but no wood is completely termite-proof.

Do termites bite people?

No, termites do not bite humans. They are not aggressive and do not carry diseases. Their mandibles are designed for chewing wood, not for biting people or pets.

What causes termites?

Termites are attracted to:

  • Moisture – Leaky pipes, poor drainage, and humid conditions can create an ideal environment.
  • Wood-to-soil contact – Wood that touches the ground, such as fences, decks, and firewood, can invite termites.
  • Cracks in foundations – These provide entry points for subterranean termites.
  • Mulch and plant debris – Organic materials near your home can serve as a food source.

Regular inspections and professional pest control services are crucial to detecting and preventing termite infestations before they cause major structural damage.

NOVATERM®, the termite detection and monitoring system

Are termite detection system NOVATERM® safe for dogs?

Yes, the NOVATERM® system is safe for pets, including dogs. It is a pesticide-free monitoring solution, meaning it does not use harmful chemicals that could pose a risk to animals. The in-ground stations are also secure and lockable, preventing pets from accessing the internal components.

Do termite detection system NOVATERM® work?

Yes, NOVATERM® is an advanced, AI-powered termite detection system designed to provide accurate, real-time monitoring. It improves colony interception and enhances efficiency for pest control operators (PCOs) by:

  • Detecting termite activity 24/7 through AI-powered sensing.
  • Notifying PCOs when intervention is needed, reducing unnecessary inspections.
  • Providing real-time data through a connected hub and mobile application.
  • This system is more precise and efficient compared to traditional detection methods.
How do NOVATERM® termite detection system work?

The NOVATERM® system consists of:

  1. In-ground stations – These durable, weatherproof stations contain a highly palatable neutral matrix that attracts termites.
  2. Cartridges – The see-through design allows easy termite access and quick inspection.
  3. A centralized connected hub – This collects data from the stations and securely stores it in the cloud for real-time analysis.
  4. Web & mobile application – These allow PCOs to monitor station activity remotely, optimize route scheduling, and receive alerts when action is needed.
How to install termite detection system ?

To install the NOVATERM® in-ground termite detection system, it’s important to note that only professionals are authorized to install this system. Here’s an outline of the process, which should be handled by a certified pest control expert:

  • Choose optimal locations – The professional will carefully select the best locations around the property, particularly near potential termite entry points (e.g., along the perimeter or close to structures that are vulnerable to termite activity).
  • Dig holes – The pest control expert will dig holes deep enough to ensure that the station sits flush with the ground surface, allowing easy access for termites while keeping the station discreet.
  • Insert the station – The professional will securely place the NOVATERM® station in the hole and lock the lid to prevent tampering or damage. This ensures that the termite detection system functions effectively without interference.
  • Activate the system – The system will be connected to the centralized monitoring hub, allowing for real-time tracking and alerts for termite activity.
  • Monitor regularly – Once installed, the system is regularly monitored through a mobile or web application. The pest control provider will track termite activity and respond to alerts as necessary.
